Do I Drink Too Much?

I don't know what it is, but whenever I have a long run, I can't stop going to the bathroom. My first major hydration issue was back when I ran Broad Street. I was gonna pee on myself before the race. Finally had a potty break before race start. But then, I had to go again at the start. Same thing happened last weekend for my 9miler. I peed numerous times before I left the house. Then when I finally get out to run, I've got to go. Lo and behold, the same thing happened today. Back and forth to the bathroom, then I get to the track and have to go again.

Now I'm wondering if I'm so concerned about long runs that I over hydrate. Or is it that long runs make me nervous, and peeing is a nervous reaction? Can it be both? Really, long runs get to me. Somewhere in the back of my head, I'm thinking it's going to be a disaster. It takes so much psyching myself up just to get out the door on a normal day. I'm so much worse when it comes to long runs. Yes, I prepare for them. I eat a great dinner. I don't drink (alcohol) the night before. I hydrate throughout the day. Go back and forth to the bathroom. I pick out a comfortable outfit. Then I take my sweet time getting out the door. But before I step out for good, I go again. And you know what? I have to go again at the beginning of my run. What the heck? Anyone else have this issue?

So on to today's run (pretty graphs and splits below)...It was a nice night. The humidity was low. There was a nice breeze. But too bad I just didn't feel like being out there. The good thing is, I did my long run today instead of tomorrow, when it's supposed to be a hot one. And trying to pull 7 miles out of my behind on a hot day when I already don't wanna be out is a recipe for disaster. I can, however, pull out 3 miles on a sucky day. So that's the plan for tomorrow.

Now, let me recap what the heck I've been doing when I'm not blogging here...

8/1 - Yoga (30min dvd)
5mi Treadmill (45:20 - 9:03 pace)

8/2 - 9mi Track (1:27:32 - 9:43)
I know, I know. Who the hell runs 9 miles on the track? I went out late, so that was my option. Luckily, I wasn't bored enough to shoot myself.

8/4 - 5mi Track (47:13 - 9:26 pace)

8/5 - Yoga Class (1hr)
3.4mi Indoor Track (29:45 - 8:45 pace)
Not sure how accurate this was. I was using my Tech 4o watch that was calibrated like 3 times. I think I have to calibrate again though.

8/6 - 5mi Track (44:48 - 8:57 pace)

I do feel like I've been slacking though. It all started when my cousin from Alaska called me at some ridiculous time and had me up til the wee hours of the morning. My sleep schedule ain't been right since. And I canceled Tuesday's swim class because I was just tired. I did make sure I got in that day's run though. I'll try to do better this week. It's supposed to be 98° on Monday. Maybe that will make want to swim on a non-swim lesson day. We shall see.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy your weekend. Peace.

Run 2/14/09

Today could have easily been a disaster. For one, I didn't eat well yesterday or today. Before I went out, I had Yerba Mate chai and Trader Joe's version of Honey Nut Cheerios. I threw some peanuts and raisins in a sandwich bag and headed out. Yes, bootleg trail mix would be my fuel. And two, it didn't help that I had to carry my 140+ pound self along with all my burdens. I've had some stuff on my mind and this is the first run that I actually took all of it with me. Running usually clears my mind. But that didn't set in until about 5 miles in.

And just when I'm feeling pretty decent, my mp3 player shuts off. There was no way I was going to attempt finishing up with no music. I desperately needed a distraction. So I had to stop for a couple seconds to turn it back on. Next thing I know, I have 8 miles under my belt and just about 1 mile to go. Let me just tell you that the last mile was the worst. Most of it felt like it was uphill. It's hard to have a strong finish when you start mile 9 going uphill. But I did pretty well. I set a goal for a 10:00/mi. And I was afraid I wouldn't meet that goal with the way I started out. But it usually takes me a couple miles to get warmed up anyway. Sometimes the longer I run, the better my overall pace. For example, I ran 5k this week at a pace of 9:36. But I ran 7 miles last week at a pace of 9:27.

Anyway, enough about that. To sum it up, I ran 9.15 mile in 90min (9:50 pace) and I'm damn proud of myself. And now, I must eat. I have a serious calorie deficit going on. Enjoy your weekend!

WTF Man!!

I set out for 10mi. And all was good. The weather was cool. The skies were blue with cotton ball looking clouds. I had my bootleg trail mix (peanuts and raisins) and my water bottle. I told myself to start out slow. I was aiming for around 11:00/mi in the beginning. That way I know I definitely wouldn't use up too much too soon.

When I got to mile 3, I wanted to speed up but tried to keep it slow. I've never attempted such a distance before. And it's not about beating a specific time. It's about getting through it and enjoying it (not wanting to die). And I was enjoying it, especially when I hit mile 4. That's when I decided I was gonna do this thing. And I started to get this weird but good feeling. I'm thinking it was a runner's high. Okay, then it starts going downhill.

Somewhere in mile 5 I start to feel some chafing. I never chafe. I've run 8mi in a running skirt and never had an issue. But today, all the sudden I have this issue. So mile 6 rolls around and I'm reminded that I may need to replace my shoes. The right head of fibula thingy started to bother me. Yes, you can tell by positive splits after that. So in mile 7, I had to stop for a few seconds and walk out the pain. Then I decided to finish running in the grass. It helped, but what I really needed to do was to stop all together. Somewhere in mile 8, I stopped and walked again. It felt better. Then I finished up 9mi instead of 10. I decided to walk a mile for my cool down. So yeah, you can say I was outside for 10mi. Because dammit, I was gonna do 10mi one way or another. I'm not too sure how I'm going to handle next weekend's run, if I will even run at all. I have a half marathon distance on schedule. I don't see that happening. Maybe I'll just do 10mi, fibula willing.

But yeah, I don't have that much mileage on my sneakers but I guess the way that I run I need to replace them sooner than average. Maybe I'll stop off at Moorestown Running Company this weekend and check some shoes out. I'm thinking I'll buy two pairs and alternate between them. We'll see.

Well, the good thing about today is that I still felt kinda high during the cool down. And I still went further than I did before. And I ran faster than I thought I would considering the injury flaring up. The first time I ran 8mi, it took 1:33:44. Today, 9mi with a jacked up fibula head took me 1:33:22. And I burned 1017 calories. I think deserve a big drink with lots of alcohol. And I should have big greasy burgers (veggie) with onion rings. I think I should treat myself.

Well, I'm off to figure out how I can best ruin my calorie deficit. Have a good weekend, all!

Music: Sujinho by Jackson Conti
I've had this album on my mp3 player for a while now. I figured I'd play something new. I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. Sounds like some type of South American jazz. And I did hear a chick singing in what sounded like Portuguese. Then I checked Amazon.com to see that it is categorized as Brazilian jazz. So I wasn't far off. It's a good listen, mostly instrumental though. But check it out.
